Renegade Comedy Theatre is set with the second show of the 2008 Season. It will be the comedy The Book of Liz. Written by siblings David and Amy Sedaris, the production runs for three weekends: February 7-9, 14-16 and 21-23 at 7pm at Teatro Zuccone, 222 East Superior Street in downtown Duluth. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Opening Night Only, February 7, is Pay What You Can Night. This show contains brief moments of adult language and situations.
The
Book of Liz
follows Sister Elizabeth Donderstock, who is Squeamish and has been her whole
life. She makes cheese balls (traditional and smoky) that sustain the
existence of her entire religious community, Clusterhaven. However, she
feels unappreciated among her Squeamish brethren, and she decides to try her
luck in the outside world. Along the way, she meets a Cockney-speaking
Ukrainian immigrant couple who find her a job waiting tables at Plymouth
Crock, a family restaurant run almost entirely by recovering alcoholics.
The alcoholics love her. The customers love her. Things are going
great for Liz until she's offered a promotion to manager. Unfortunately,
Liz has a sweating problem, and to get the job, she'll have to fix it.
Meanwhile, back in Clusterhaven, Liz's compatriots just can't seem to
duplicate her cheese ball recipe, and it's going to cost them their quaint,
cloistered lifestyle. They are panic-stricken and desperate, and sure
she sabotaged the recipe. Does Liz go through with the operation?
Can the Squeamish be saved? Will the cheese balls ever taste good again?
The answers to these and so many other questions can be found this comedy from
David and Amy
Sedaris.
The
cast includes Renegade veterans Christa Schulz, Jean Sramek, Tracy Close, Greg
Anderson, Cheryl Skafte and Chani Ninneman. Cast members Jamie Harvie
and Bryanna Raiche have taken part in the Out of the Hat Plays at Renegade as
well. The show is directed by Brian Matuszak, a co-founder of Renegade
Comedy Theatre and great admirer of all the comedic talent in this cast
and of the Sedaris’.
