RENEGADE COMEDY THEATRE TO PUT ON 

8 writers, 8 directors, and a whole bunch of actors walk into a theater at 8am on a Friday. 11 hours later, 8 original plays are premiered. Then the whole thing starts over again for Saturday. It must be time for another go-round of Out of the Hat. It will be staged at Teatro Zuccone located at 222 East Superior Street on Friday and Saturday, November 9 & 10. Tickets are $15 per person. Two Night Passes are available for $20.

Out of the Hat is an intensely creative weekend of theater. On Thursday night, everyone comes together and tosses prompts into a Who Hat, a What Hat, and a Where Hat. 8 writers step forward, draw their prompts, then go home to write up a ten minute script that incorporates those prompts. On Friday, 8 directors and a bunch of actors show up at 8am, along with 8 very tired writers. The directors draw their scripts and their casts out of more Hats, then the fun begins. The directors and actors rehearse all day, finding whatever props and costumes they can along the way, and at 7pm, all 8 shows are debuted to an appreciative audience! After the Friday performances, the audience is invited to toss some prompts into the Who, What, and Where Hats, and the entire process starts all over again.


Out of the Hat has proven to be a popular weekend for local theater artists. Writers, directors and actors from Renegade, Colder by the Lake, UMD Theatre, St.Scholastica Theatre, UWS Theatre, the Duluth Playhouse, Harbor City International High School, and many other local groups get an opportunity to come together and create live theater. Out of the Hat makes for unique collaborations that might not otherwise happen. For example, a UWS Theatre instructor can direct St. Scholastica theater students, or professional performers from the Twin Cities might come up and get a chance to share some tips with area high school theater students.
